As a business owner and for non-profits, it is crucial now more than ever to choose the proper e-commerce platform since organizations are operating in the digital world. The three platforms that are widely used are Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce. They all have advantages and disadvantages that are different from one another such as the cost, ease of use, flexibility and scalability.

Shopify
The strengths found on Shopify is that it is easy to use and helps you start very easily. If you want to launch a store, this site does not require you to know a lot of technology and navigation. There is a drag-and-drop builder and ready-made themes that stand out and are simple to understand and use. Shopify also takes care of all built-in security, payments and POS systems if the seller decides to sell in person. Lastly, it has a big app store, so as you grow, you can add more features once you are comfortable using it. (Techradar, 2025).

Although Shopify is simple to use and safe, it costs a lot. Monthly fees are required and you will have to add onto that if you stack up apps. Shopify also uses its own coding system called Liquid, and this means you are unable to customize things too much in depth or creatively. It is best if you are okay with paying for the convenience of a fast launch.
WooCommerce
The strengths of WooCommerce is that it is basically a free plugin for WordPress, meaning you can tweak many things. You can have total creative control without feeling like the site is stopping you from being able to customize things, like Shopify does. WooCommerce is a great option for SEO and for businesses that use blog or content marketing. (WebsiteBuilderExpert, 2025).

The weaknesses are that if you are a beginner in e-commerce sites, it may be too advanced for you. You need to keep things updated yourself, find your own hosting, does not help with security and you need to add plugins for things that Shopify already provides you with. The bad plugin is free, however, you will probably need to use extra tools and premium themes, which are not free. WooCommerce requires more effort and more knowledge in the tech world.
BigCommerce
The advantages of BigCommerce is that it is a hosted platform, but it also comes with many more built-in features, such as advanced inventory tools, multi-currency selling and no transaction fees. This one is best for someone whose business is still growing big or to reach global customers. (Techradar, 2025).

The downside to this platform is that it is not as beginner-friendly as Shopify, and the designs are not as flexible as WooCommerce. BigCommerce also may not be the best option for those who are just starting out their small business because it may be above their budget. However, if you see your business growing a lot, it may be a great investment.
Which option is best for a non-profit or business?
Choosing between these three sites, BigCommerce would be the best option for those with small-to-medium businesses or nonprofits. It has the tools needed to scale, it does not unfairly charge you with transaction fees, and it handles security and hosting so you can put more of your focus, time and energy on selling.
However, Shopify does make more sense if you are eager to set up and get started right away. WooCommerce is also great if you are confident in your tech skills or have a developer who can help you build something custom made. To conclude, this varies based on how much control you may want and how much maintenance you are okay dealing with.
